English - Ruta de la Sal

Local charity, Joves Navegants, finalised its crew lists this week ready for the forthcoming regattas of the Ruta de la Sal and Palma Vela.

The Foundation, which enables disadvantaged young people from all over the island to learn about the sea, ecology, navigation and boat maintenance skills, has been able to help far more youngsters since it was given the 21 metre ketch Galaxie, in 2003. Every weekend, weather permitting, a group of youngsters take to the waves with Captain Ramon to visit Cabrera or Dragonera and hone their seamanship skills.

On average Joves Navegants introduces 300 new children to the sea every year. From this wealth of enthusiastic youths, eight have been chosen to take part in this year’s Ruta de la Sal. Currently in its 20th edition, the northern Ruta de la Sal starts from Barcelona on the 5th of April. 326 yachts with over 2000 competitors will race to Ibiza town, arriving in time for prize giving on Saturday evening.

Galaxie and her crew will leave Palma this Sunday, April 1,  and should arrive in Barcelona on Monday where the crew will visit the maritime museum, a workshop which restores boats and the famous Barcelona aquarium. On Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon all the boats of the competitors will be open to the public and the crew of Galaxie will have the chance to explain what Joves Navegants has done for them to some of Barcelona’s associations for young people who will visit the yacht. Early on Thursday morning Galaxie will sail out with the other competitors in the Charlie Class and race for the start line.

A second team of 18 crew have been chosen to sail Galaxie in the Palma Vela. This glamourous spring regatta sails out of Palma’s Real Club Nautico between 18 and 22 April and is sponsored by Swiss watchmaker, Hublot. The 250 yachts expected to participate this year include the new monster Maxi, Alfa Romeo2, which is said to be the fastest monohull yacht in the world.

For many years Joves Navegants has worked tirelessly to give hundreds of young people maritime experiences which build their confidence, provide them with skills they may be able to use in the work place and teach them how to work as a team. Our youth is our future, and these keen kids will use all their strength and seamanship to sail Galaxie to victory this Easter weekend.
