Discovering Posidonia: an educational day aboard Galaxie

The Institut d’Estudis Eivissencs and marine biologist Eva joined a group of students for a day of marine exploration, discovering the importance of Posidonia meadows along the coast of Ibiza.

The Institut d’Estudis Eivissencs and marine biologist Eva organised a very special educational outing aboard the sailing yacht Galaxie. Carefully planned to minimise any impact on the marine environment, the activity took a group of students along the coast of Ibiza with one clear objective: to observe and better understand the ecological value of Posidonia oceanica meadows.

The day included a stop in a carefully selected area where Posidonia thrives and plays a vital role in the Mediterranean ecosystem. There, Eva led an educational session both on board and in the water. The students learned what this marine plant is, how it flowers once a year, its remarkable ability to absorb CO₂ and oxygenate the water, and the essential role it plays in protecting our beaches.

Equipped with masks and snorkels, those who wished to take part joined a short supervised snorkelling session to observe the meadows first-hand. Others followed the activity from the dinghy, enjoying the experience from a different perspective.

The day brought together science, environmental awareness and respect for the marine environment.
