Listening to the Sea to Protect It: a Sound Expedition aboard Galaxie
An immersive experience combining electric sailing, art and marine acoustic science, in collaboration with Music for the Sea, TrueWorld and the Marine Research Institute of the University of Cádiz.
The waters of Ibiza became the setting for a unique journey: a sound expedition bringing together science, music, technology and marine awareness. Organised by Music for the Sea, in collaboration with TrueWorld, the Marine Research Institute (INMAR) at the University of Cádiz, and the Ocean World of Sound project (UNESCO, Cancún), this sensory experience aboard the zero-emission sailing yacht Galaxie was built around a simple yet powerful idea: to stop and listen to the sea.
We sailed along the coast of Ibiza accompanied by marine scientists, underwater acoustics experts and a group of artists led by Coco Francavilla, founder of Music for the Sea. At the heart of the expedition was an immersive listening session created on site. Accompanied by a live cellist, the experience transformed the interior of Galaxie into an intimate space where art, science and nature came together.
Using hydrophones, sounds from beneath the surface were captured in real time, creating an immersive soundscape that revealed both the beauty and the vulnerability of the Mediterranean.
The purpose of the expedition was not only artistic, but also scientific and educational. Researchers from INMAR and Ocean World of Sound shared how sound can become a powerful tool for understanding the health of the ocean, studying the effects of anthropogenic noise and protecting key ecosystems such as Posidonia meadows, one of the Mediterranean’s most vital habitats.
This collaboration represents an important step within the Love the Mediterranean project, bringing artists into real scientific initiatives and opening up new ways for marine acoustic technology to connect with emotion and collective environmental awareness.
“When I started, I had no connection with the scientific community,” says Francavilla. “Now, thanks to these partnerships, we can become part of real research and bring art to the forefront of marine conservation.”
The experience was made possible thanks to the commitment of @mikasaibiza, which hosted the team during their stay, and the essential support of @trueworld.organisation, united by a shared vision: to educate, inspire and take action for the sea we love.
Because listening to the sea is the first step towards protecting it.
